Get your door back on speaking terms with Home Assistant
Your garage door should not lose its automations because somebody changed a cloud API. Home Assistant removed its myQ integration after Chamberlain blocked third-party access. The useful replacement is a local controller that matches your opener—not another app with a different logo.
For a compatible Chamberlain or LiftMaster Security+ 2.0 opener, choose Konnected blaQ. For a packaged controller and wired door sensor, choose the HomeKit version of meross MSG100 after matching the opener. For an existing Z-Wave setup and a documented dry-contact input, choose Zooz ZEN16 800LR plus a position sensor. Just want an alert when the door stays open? Add the THIRDREALITY Zigbee tilt sensor to the coordinator you already have.
Specs and local-control routes come from the makers and Home Assistant documentation.
The parts lists are alternatives. You need one suitable control route, not every controller here. Tilt sensors add status and alerts; they do not operate the motor. Bring an existing Home Assistant host and whichever radio your chosen parts need.
First, meet your opener
Read the model label and the maker’s compatibility guide before choosing a controller. Two wall buttons can look similar and speak completely different languages.
- Security+ / Security+ 2.0: Konnected lists compatible Chamberlain-family openers with red, purple or round yellow learn buttons. Match the exact model, not just the brand. Its current blaQ page excludes Security+ 3.0 with a round white learn button.
- Momentary dry-contact input: a suitable relay briefly closes the opener’s specified control circuit. This is the ZEN16 route. A bare dry-contact relay does not send Security+ digital commands.
- meross compatibility: use the MSG100 compatibility checker. Some Chamberlain/LiftMaster/Craftsman installations need an additional meross accessory. Get the matched accessory before treating the kit as complete.
blaQ’s installation guide specifies a sectional door, not a one-piece or swinging door, and a working obstruction beam. Follow the opener’s safety features—never disable photo-eyes.
The picks: controller or sensor?
| Your route | Pick | What reports door status? |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible Security+ / Security+ 2.0 | Konnected blaQ | Opener communication through its ESPHome cover |
| Packaged HomeKit kit for a compatible opener | meross MSG100 HomeKit | Included wired door sensor |
| Z-Wave and a dry-contact opener input | Zooz ZEN16 800LR | Add a separate wired or wireless sensor |
| Z-Wave tilt add-on | Ecolink TILTZWAVE5.0 | Sensor tilt/open-closed report |
| Sensor-only route on existing Zigbee | THIRDREALITY garage tilt sensor | Sensor tilt/open-closed report |
A door-position sensor tells you whether the door is closed or has moved away from its closed position. It does not tell you that the space below the door is clear. Keep position reporting and the opener’s obstruction protection as separate jobs.
Security+ 2.0 pick: Konnected blaQ
Choose Konnected GDO blaQ for a supported Security+ opener when you want a maker-documented Home Assistant route. Konnected’s Home Assistant setup page uses the built-in ESPHome integration and exposes a garage-door cover entity.
Complete the maker’s Wi-Fi and physical setup, then add the discovered ESPHome device under Settings → Devices & services. Home Assistant’s ESPHome integration is Local Push. Try the cover’s Open and Close controls while you can observe the door, and verify that the reported state follows it.
Keep blaQ in its normal Open/Close command mode for the recipes below. Konnected explains that its Toggle Only mode changes commands into wall-button-style toggles. The normal mode sends distinct open and close commands and respects the opener’s IR safety beam.
The installation manual specifies an audible and visual warning for five seconds before closing. Keep that warning active. This is why blaQ is the controller used for the night-close recipe here.
Where ratgdo fits
The ESPHome ratgdo project is another local route. Its firmware selector asks for both the opener protocol and the exact board version; its dry-contact option requires open and close limit switches.
The Amazon ratgdo-style candidate checked for this guide is branded and sold by Simpley Solutions, a third-party supplier, rather than official ratgdo hardware. It is outside the parts list because a matched board-revision/firmware guide was not verified. Choose blaQ for the documented packaged route here, or follow the project’s exact hardware selection when buying ratgdo separately.
Packaged HomeKit pick: meross MSG100
Choose the HomeKit meross MSG100 when the opener matches meross’s supported input or its specified accessory. The selected listing explicitly includes HomeKit; other MSG100 versions are a different buying decision. The maker’s kit page includes a wired door sensor, so you get control and position sensing together.
For local Home Assistant control, use HomeKit Device. That is the integration for bringing a HomeKit accessory into Home Assistant. It is classified Local Push.
Join the controller to Wi-Fi using the maker’s setup process, keep its HomeKit pairing code, and add it through HomeKit Device. The accessory must not already be paired to another HomeKit controller; Home Assistant’s guide explains how to remove an existing Apple Home pairing while keeping the network setup. Confirm both the garage cover and its door state before adding automations.
This is a packaged kit, not universal compatibility. The opener/accessory match is the deciding step; a HomeKit logo does not change the opener’s control terminals.
Z-Wave pick: Zooz ZEN16 plus a tilt sensor
Choose Zooz ZEN16 800LR when your opener has a documented momentary dry-contact control input and your setup already uses Z-Wave. The current maker manual identifies the selected 800LR version and its dry-contact relays. Give it its specified power supply as well as the Z-Wave connection.
The Z-Wave setup guide and Z-Wave JS documentation cover the radio and inclusion. Follow Zooz’s garage setup for your hardware version’s momentary/garage configuration.
A relay pulse behaves like pressing the wall button. Relay on/off is not door open/closed. Add a position sensor and start with a supervised pulse control alongside that sensor’s status. Before adapting directional Open/Close automations, build and test a position-aware cover; do not substitute the raw relay toggle into the blaQ recipe.
For a Z-Wave sensor, the Ecolink TILTZWAVE5.0 matches the current listing. Its Ecolink-authored TILT-ZWAVE5 manual describes angle detection and open/closed reports. Use that model’s instructions, not the older TILTZWAVE2.5 sheet.
Smallest upgrade: a Zigbee tilt sensor and a useful alert
If the first job is simply “tell me I left it open,” choose the THIRDREALITY garage tilt sensor. The maker page lists Zigbee and Home Assistant compatibility. Pair it through ZHA using the radio from the Zigbee coordinator guide.
This sensor-only route buys the missing status signal without replacing a working opener. Mount it as the maker specifies, open and close the door, and identify which reported state means closed. Use the alert recipe first; add motor control later if you need it.
Three automations, in a sensible order
Start with alerts, then add movement. Set up the Companion app’s phone notifications first. Door control stays local through the chosen integration; phone delivery uses your configured notification connection.
1. Left open for ten minutes: the friendly nudge
In Settings → Automations & scenes, create an automation. Choose State changed for the cover or tilt entity, set To to its open state, and For at least to ten minutes. Add a notification to your selected phone: “Garage door is still open.” Press Save.
Open the door under observation and check the real state transition and notification. The state-trigger guide explains the duration field. Restarting Home Assistant or reloading automations discards pending waits; the entity needs a new matching state change to retrigger.
Ten minutes is a chosen reminder setting. This recipe works with either tilt sensor even if you have not installed a controller.
2. Night close, with the warning where people can hear it
Use blaQ’s normal directional cover, with its audible/visual pre-closing warning active. Create a Toggle helper for automatic closing using the helper guide, then add a Time trigger at your chosen night-time check. Add conditions that your automatic-close helper is enabled and the cover reports Open. Leave the helper off until you finish testing.
For the action, choose Close cover for blaQ’s garage entity—not Toggle. Its own warning runs before the close command. Use the cover actions and Konnected’s instructions for that route. A closed, moving, unknown or unavailable door should not pass your Open condition.
Save and test at a time when you can watch the door. Verify the warning and the opener’s obstruction/reversal tests using its manual. If the door remains open, send an alert for inspection rather than looping close commands. For a bare ZEN16 or a controller whose warning path you have not set up, keep the night-time action as an alert.
3. Arrival open, with your thumb making the decision
Use Zone entered with your chosen person/device tracker and arrival zone. The current trigger guide walks through those fields. Add a condition that your position-aware garage cover is Closed, then send an actionable notification asking, “Open the garage?”
Follow the Companion app’s actionable-notification example: give the Open button an action identifier unique to that automation run, and wait only for the matching mobile_app_notification_action response. Its example uses context.id to keep responses from different runs separate.
Set a short timeout you choose and turn Continue on timeout off. Also require wait.completed before the movement action. The automation troubleshooting guide explains these wait controls. A dismissed or expired prompt should finish without moving the door.
After a matching confirmation, check again that the same person is still in the arrival zone and the cover is still Closed, then use Open cover. Save, test the confirmation, and test ignoring it. Location starts the conversation; your explicit response authorizes the opening.
Give it a place in your dashboard
Show the cover and its actual status together. Keep a sensor-only tile clearly labelled as status, and keep a raw relay control separate from a directional garage cover. If you use Alarmo, decide how an open garage should affect arming and alerts before adding it to an alarm mode.
Pick blaQ for supported Security+ control, meross HomeKit for its compatible packaged route, or ZEN16 for a deliberate dry-contact build. Start with a tilt sensor when an alert solves today’s problem. Then head back to the Home Assistant hub for the next local-control project.
