The short answer: choose the connection first

For a new USB Zigbee setup, choose the SONOFF Dongle Plus MG24. It combines an EFR32MG24 radio, documented Home Assistant and Zigbee2MQTT support, and an included extension cable for placement away from the host. If you want to place the radio away from your computer, choose the SMLIGHT SLZB-06MG24U over wired Ethernet, with PoE if you have a compatible switch or injector. The Zigbee2MQTT network coordinator guide walks through the PoE setup.

For a basic USB build, the SONOFF Dongle Lite MG21 supplies the documented Zigbee role without adding network hardware. For Thread, plan a dedicated radio and the border-router software it needs; do not replace a working Zigbee coordinator’s firmware just to add a Matter device.

Research note: Specifications and setup guidance come from maker and project documentation; we have not tested these radios for range or device capacity.

Zigbee, Thread and Matter are different purchase requirements

A Zigbee coordinator starts and manages the Zigbee network used by ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. A Thread border router connects a Thread mesh to the IP network. Matter is an application standard that can use Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet; your Zigbee devices remain on their separate Zigbee network. Home Assistant’s Matter documentation explains these separate roles.

Buy a Zigbee adapter for Zigbee sensors and switches. For Matter-over-Thread devices, provide a suitable Thread border router and a Matter controller. You do not need a Thread stick for Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices.

If you already have a suitable Thread border router, check its Home Assistant integration before ordering another radio. If you need new radios for both networks, use one Zigbee radio plus one Thread radio: two radios.

Compare the five coordinators

The table separates physical connection from radio firmware. USB power on a network adapter is not the same thing as choosing its USB data mode.

Sources: SONOFF’s MG24 introduction, Lite MG21 introduction; SMLIGHT’s MG24U and 06U pages; ConBee III; and the Zigbee2MQTT Ember adapter list. Match the full suffix, not just the brand.

Default USB choice: SONOFF Dongle Plus MG24

Choose the Dongle-PMG24 when you can connect it to your Home Assistant computer and position it nearby. SONOFF documents the EFR32MG24 hardware and alternative firmware, while Zigbee2MQTT lists this exact model in its Ember family. Use its Ember settings when configuring Zigbee2MQTT.

The maker’s packing list includes a 1 m USB extension. Use it to move the radio away from your computer. ZHA’s hardware guidance recommends a USB extension, a USB 2.0 connection and separation from USB 3.0 interference sources. Keep it clear of your computer’s metal chassis and crowded USB cabling.

Start with the coordinator firmware required by the chosen integration. OpenThread RCP and Zigbee router firmware are different jobs: router firmware extends an existing Zigbee mesh rather than creating the coordinator Home Assistant needs.

Basic USB choice: Lite MG21

Choose the Dongle Lite MG21 when you want straightforward USB Zigbee control and can connect it near your host. The maker documents its EFR32MG21 chip, Home Assistant/Zigbee2MQTT use and alternative OpenThread firmware. Its packing list includes a 0.5 m extension. Check that it reaches your chosen position.

If your computer sits too far from the devices you want to connect, choose an Ethernet adapter so you can position the radio independently.

Network-placed choice: SMLIGHT SLZB-06MG24U

Choose the SLZB-06MG24U when you want the radio somewhere other than beside your computer. Wired Ethernet carries the host connection; supported 802.3af PoE can provide power, or the maker documents USB-C power. Confirm the exact power source and operating mode. An Ethernet socket alone does not supply PoE.

SMLIGHT lists ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT support and documents configuration and updates through SLZB-OS. The important buying advantage is placement without a direct USB cable back to the host.

Prefer wired Ethernet for this role. ZHA warns against serial proxies over Wi-Fi, WAN or VPN because that transport can create problems. Check that your adapter reconnects after you restart the host or network equipment.

Choose the SLZB-06U if you want the CC2652P / zStack path. Match the full model suffix when selecting firmware: the MG24U uses a different chip.

When ConBee III makes sense

Choose ConBee III for the documented Phoscon/deCONZ workflow, or when you want to use its supported ZHA route. Its maker also links Zigbee2MQTT support. Choose one of those software routes; you do not need Phoscon to run ZHA.

For a fresh Zigbee2MQTT build, prefer one of the Ember or zStack choices above when coordinator backup support is a deciding requirement. The project’s adapter documentation currently limits coordinator backups to those families. The ConBee III’s deCONZ path does not support that coordinator-backup feature.

Phoscon has its own backup workflow. Use the backup and migration procedure for your chosen integration.

Thread and Matter: dedicate the radio

For an Amazon-linked USB option from this shortlist, choose a separate MG24 dongle when your host supports the documented OpenThread RCP route. SONOFF provides different firmware roles; changing to Thread means that radio is no longer serving its previous Zigbee coordinator job. The host still needs the appropriate border-router service and Home Assistant configuration.

For a network adapter, SMLIGHT also documents Zigbee/Thread role switching. Follow the SLZB-OS instructions for your exact model and Thread setup.

The official alternative is Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2. ZHA recommends it, and the official page provides current reseller links and setup guidance. Follow that page if official Home Assistant hardware and its guided setup are your priority. Its documentation says to dedicate the adapter to either Zigbee or Thread, and that it cannot operate as an independent Thread border router without Home Assistant.

Set it up in Home Assistant

For a new Zigbee network, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the adapter. Put a USB stick on its extension cable and a USB 2.0 port, away from USB 3.0 equipment. For the MG24U, connect wired Ethernet and power it with supported 802.3af PoE or USB-C power.
  2. Choose your Zigbee software. For ZHA, go to Settings → Devices & services → Add Integration, then select Zigbee Home Automation. If you prefer Zigbee2MQTT on Home Assistant OS, follow its Home Assistant installation guide and configure an MQTT broker.
  3. Select your radio. Follow ZHA’s setup prompts, or configure the connection and adapter family in Zigbee2MQTT. Use the settings for your exact model, with Zigbee coordinator firmware. Let only your chosen integration use the radio.
  4. Pair your first device. Select Add device in ZHA’s Zigbee page, or Permit join in Zigbee2MQTT. Put the sensor into its manufacturer’s pairing mode; the Zigbee2MQTT pairing guide links model-specific instructions.
  5. Check the result. Name the device and confirm that its state or reading appears in Home Assistant. Finish the ZHA scan or close Zigbee2MQTT joining after you have added the device.
  6. Back up your network. ZHA makes automatic network backups and lets you create a manual one under Network Settings. With Zigbee2MQTT, follow its adapter-specific backup procedure; coordinator backups require an Ember or zStack adapter. Include the integration’s data in your recovery plan.

The ZHA setup, pairing and backup documentation covers its path in detail.

What to pair first: follow our Home Assistant starter kit for contact, motion, temperature and leak sensors, then turn those readings into useful automations.

Ready to use the Thread side? Set up a Matter-over-Thread network with the right border router for your phone, then pair a sensor or plug. Keep your existing Zigbee coordinator on Zigbee.

Check the host, firmware and recovery plan before ordering

Choose your Home Assistant host alongside the radio. Our mini-PC buying guide compares host memory, storage and networking; this coordinator choice is a separate hardware requirement. If you run Home Assistant in a VM, assign the USB adapter to that guest and check that it reconnects after a host restart. The Proxmox versus Docker guide explains why the operating-system boundary matters.

Match the integration, exact adapter model and supported firmware before connecting devices. For Zigbee2MQTT, follow the current adapter-family settings instead of copying another stick’s baud rate or flow-control configuration. For Thread/Matter, follow Home Assistant’s documented network prerequisites.

Back up the existing network before migration or firmware changes. If you migrate inside ZHA, use a ZHA backup and its supported-radio procedure. Preserve the recovery information and follow that integration’s instructions for the old radio after migration.

For the purchase itself, choose MG24 for direct USB, MG24U for wired network placement, Lite MG21 for a basic USB requirement, or ConBee III for the Phoscon/deCONZ route. Add a dedicated Thread radio when your setup needs it.
