Use the upgraded AKM analog stage with an RCA amplifier or powered speakers, with a voice remote included.
Your old amplifier does not need replacing just because it cannot join an automation. Give it a WiiM, and you can put its volume on your Home Assistant dashboard, start a favourite station with a button, and pause the music without hunting for another app.
Choose WiiM Pro for most Home Assistant setups. Ethernet, optical and coaxial outputs, RCA connections and Google Cast make it the flexible middle option. Choose Mini for a small Wi-Fi-to-optical or AUX upgrade, or Pro Plus when you will use its upgraded analog RCA output. All three work with the official WiiM integration.
This research-based guide uses WiiM’s manuals and Home Assistant’s documentation.
Need speakers for the other end of that RCA cable? The powered desk-speaker guide separates analogue pairs from USB audio speakers.
Quick picks: start with the socket on your stereo
- Best all-rounder — WiiM Pro: connect it by Ethernet, feed an existing DAC through optical or coax, and keep AirPlay 2, Google Cast and Spotify Connect available.
- Best compact optical streamer — WiiM Mini: tuck it beside powered speakers or a receiver when Wi-Fi, optical output and AirPlay 2 cover your needs.
- Best for analog RCA — WiiM Pro Plus: connect directly to an amplifier’s line input or powered speakers and use the upgraded AKM DAC. Its voice remote is included.
These are streamers, so you need powered speakers or an amplifier for passive speakers. Choose the output first; the rest of the shopping becomes much easier.

Connections and supply ratings come from the Mini manual, Pro manual and Pro Plus manual. Supply ratings describe the adapter you need, not measured wall consumption.
Buy the Pro when you want options
The Pro earns its place through connections. Ethernet lets you give the streamer a wired network connection; coaxial output gives an external DAC another way in. Optical input also lets you bring in a compatible TV or other digital source. Use stereo PCM for that input: the Pro manual excludes Dolby Digital and DTS.
Choose it for Google Cast, too. The Mini supports AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect but leaves Google Cast out; Pro and Pro Plus include it. If you switch between Apple and Google devices, Pro keeps both routes open.
Already happy with the DAC in your receiver? Send digital audio to it. That is a strong reason to choose Pro over Pro Plus: you get the extra connections while using the converter you already own. The Pro manual covers optical, coaxial and RCA wiring, plus its 12 V trigger output for compatible equipment.
Buy the Mini for the small, simple upgrade
Mini is the tidy choice when you want music to reach an existing system over Wi-Fi. Use optical for a receiver or external DAC, or its 3.5 mm analog output for an AUX input. A suitable 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable also connects it to an amplifier’s RCA line input.
You still get AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Home Assistant control. You give up Ethernet, coaxial output, optical input and Google Cast. Those are the useful differences to decide on, rather than assuming the larger box makes every source sound better.
The Mini manual also includes DLNA and WiiM grouping. A compact streamer can therefore be a full-time player for a stereo, rather than something you pair over Bluetooth each time you want a song.
Buy Pro Plus for its analog stage
Pro Plus makes sense when RCA is your final connection to the amplifier or powered speakers. Its AKM AK4493SEQ DAC replaces the TI PCM5121 used in Mini and Pro, and it includes the WiiM Voice Remote.
It upgrades analog recording as well: WiiM specifies analog-to-digital conversion up to 192 kHz/24-bit, versus 48 kHz/24-bit on Pro. That matters if you plan to bring an analog source into the WiiM system. A turntable still needs a phono preamp or a built-in line-level output.
For optical or coaxial playback into another DAC, pick on connectivity and controls. The Pro Plus’s internal DAC serves its analog output; your external DAC handles conversion when you use the digital output. Put the Plus on your shortlist for the connection you will actually use. See the Pro Plus manual for its analog stage and wiring.
What works locally in Home Assistant?
The official WiiM integration supports Mini, Pro and Pro Plus. It is Local Push: playback and state updates travel over your local network, and the integration does not use WiiM app cloud authentication.
You can control playback, volume, mute and input selection, browse presets and the current queue, and group WiiM players. Track skipping, seeking, repeat and shuffle depend on the active source. Internet music services still need their own connection and account; local control does not turn Spotify into an offline library.
That gives you useful everyday controls. Put the player on your wall-tablet dashboard, start a preset from a Zigbee scene button, or add pause to an existing lights-off routine. You can do the HA side without adding an Alexa or Google speaker.
Make it play from Home Assistant
Start with a favourite preset. It is easy to recognise when the right station starts, and it keeps your first automation short.
- Connect the audio and power. Select the matching input on your amplifier or powered speakers. Begin at a modest volume.
- Set up WiiM Home. Connect the streamer to your network, update its firmware and select the connected audio output. Play something from the app first, then save a favourite as preset 1.
- Add WiiM in HA. Go to Settings → Devices & services and add the discovered player. If it is missing, select Add integration → WiiM.
- Keep discovery working. HA and WiiM need the same local network, mDNS discovery and a valid HA internal URL for local callbacks. If you use VLANs, allow that communication rather than isolating the player from its controller.
- Try a preset action. In Settings → Tools → Actions, use
media_player.play_mediawith your WiiM entity and the example below, then select Perform action. - Put it where you will use it. Add the player to a dashboard, or reuse the action in a button-triggered automation and select Save.
WiiM’s HA setup guide covers app preparation; HA’s Play specified media instructions show the current action editor.
action: media_player.play_media
target:
entity_id: media_player.example_wiim
data:
media_content_type: music
media_content_id: "1"
Replace media_player.example_wiim with your player’s entity. The numeric ID selects the preset, following the example in the WiiM integration documentation. Save something in that slot before trying it.
For the visual automation editor, add your trigger under When, then choose Add action under Then do. Select your player under By target, choose Play specified media, select the media and save. You can also paste the action YAML into the editor. Test the action first, then use the real button or trigger to test the whole routine.
A button, a dashboard and a group
Give one button a clear job: press for your favourite preset, another gesture for pause. Our scene-remote guide walks through choosing the device trigger. Keep the WiiM action the same and swap the trigger to suit your button.
On a dashboard, keep volume and play/pause near the lighting controls you use for the same activity. You do not need a screen full of album art and advanced controls to make an old stereo feel new.
For multiple WiiM players, HA documents media_player.join and media_player.unjoin. Use those for WiiM grouping; use Apple or Google controls for groups in their respective ecosystems. Mini cannot join a Google Cast group. The WiiM integration also supports direct URL playback and HA media-source browsing when the device HTTP API is available.
Power, remotes and the final pick
USB-C on these boxes is for power, not a USB drive or USB DAC. Use the supplied adapter and leave the streamer available for HA commands. None of these three provides HDMI ARC or speaker amplification; their manuals show the audio connections you can use.
Voice control is a separate choice. Mini works with compatible Siri and Alexa devices; Pro and Pro Plus add Google Assistant support. Pro’s remote is optional, while Pro Plus includes a voice remote. These routes sit alongside your local HA controls, so you can start with a dashboard and add voice later.
Buy Pro for Ethernet, coax and Google Cast; Mini for a compact optical or AUX player; Pro Plus for direct analog RCA playback. Keep the speakers you like, add the controls you want, and make the first button play something worth listening to. Find your next project in the Home Assistant hub.
