Buying a case fan or tower cooler after identifying the noise source, mounting space and supported control.
A noise source elsewhere in the system, an enclosure too short for these towers, or a curve that compromises cooling.
Which fan or CPU cooler should you buy?

For a compatible 120 mm fan position, choose the Noctua NF-A12x25 G2 PWM. For a 140 mm position with enough depth, the ARCTIC P14 Pro PST is the 140 mm pick. For a tower CPU cooler, start with the be quiet! Pure Rock 3 Black if the CPU, socket and case fit. Choose the Noctua NH-U12S redux if its six-year warranty matters and the taller cooler fits.
Research note: Specifications below are vendor figures, not our own cooling tests. Fan-only and complete-cooler noise ratings have different scopes and are not a matched quietness ranking. Confirm the exact model, condition, included accessories and seller terms on Amazon before buying.
Compare the four buying picks
| Product | Size / CPU fit | Max fan RPM | Max airflow | Max static pressure | Rated noise and scope | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Noctua NF-A12x25 G2 PWM | 120 × 120 × 25 mm; 27 mm with pads | 1,800 | 63.15 CFM | 3.14 mm H₂O | 22.5 dB(A), fan | 6 years |
| ARCTIC P14 Pro PST | 140 × 140 × 27 mm | 2,500 | 110 CFM | 5.2 mm H₂O | Not specified in reviewed sheet | 6 years |
| be quiet! Pure Rock 3 Black | 120 mm fan; 154 mm cooler height; AM4/AM5, LGA1700/1851 | 2,000 | 59.6 CFM, fan | 2.41 mm H₂O, fan | 31.2 dB(A), complete cooler at full fan speed | 3 years |
| Noctua NH-U12S redux | 120 mm fan; 158 mm cooler height; AM4/AM5, LGA1700/1851 | 1,700 | 70.75 CFM, fan | 2.83 mm H₂O, fan | 25.1 dB(A), supplied fan | 6 years |
Sources: NF-A12x25 G2 specifications, P14 Pro PST datasheet, Pure Rock 3 Black specifications, and NH-U12S redux specifications. Common CPU sockets are shown; check the complete compatibility list and delivered kit for the exact platform. Noctua fan figures are without a low-noise adaptor.
Maximum airflow and maximum static pressure describe different endpoints, not simultaneous performance. ARCTIC’s pressure/flow curve illustrates the relationship. A filter, grille or heatsink changes the operating point, so adding published CFM figures does not calculate installed case airflow.
Buy for the part making the noise
Listen before ordering. A steady rush, repeated speed surges and a mechanical rattle call for different checks. Do not buy case fans for a loud GPU or drive until you have checked whether airflow or the component itself is responsible.
| What you notice | First check | Buying decision |
|---|---|---|
| Rushing air through a restricted intake | Filters, panels, obstructions and fan speed | Fix the path before adding fans |
| Repeated speed changes | Control mode, sensor and curve response | Keep the fan if supported control solves it |
| Rattle or contact noise | Secure mounting and nearby cables, with power isolated | Correct mounting or replace the identified faulty part |
| CPU cooling is the constraint | Exact CPU requirements, cooler fit and sustained workload | Choose a suitable tower, not extra case fans by default |
Keep the original settings and a working cooling arrangement available. Do not stop moving blades or disconnect fans while powered to identify a sound. Follow the equipment instructions, and leave internal PSU service to its manufacturer.
A 120 mm position: Noctua NF-A12x25 G2 PWM
Buy the G2 PWM when you need a documented 120 mm option with speed control, included anti-vibration mounting accessories and six-year coverage.
Match the full model name. The original NF-A12x25, G2, low-speed and different-voltage versions are separate products. This table uses the brown NF-A12x25 G2 PWM, not the original fan’s specifications.
Check depth as well as diameter. Noctua lists 25 mm without the anti-vibration pads and 27 mm with them. A tight mounting space needs the installed dimensions, screw clearance and cable route. Secure the fan using the specified hardware; an isolation accessory is not permission to leave a mount loose.
A 140 mm position: ARCTIC P14 Pro PST
Choose the P14 Pro PST for a compatible 140 mm mounting position with 27 mm depth and supported PWM control.
Do not order it for a 120 mm-only opening. Its higher maximum RPM is available capacity, not a sensible instruction to run it flat out for every workload.
Select the black single fan ACFAN00314A. The old P14 PWM PST, Pro A-RGB and CO versions are different listings. Do not borrow another version’s noise number to fill the blank in this fan’s sheet.
PST provides a sharing connection for PWM control; it is not pressure sensing or automatic proof that the motherboard header can power an arbitrary chain. Check the board’s header rating and the fans’ electrical requirements before sharing a connection. Buy only the number of fans the actual airflow path needs.
Tower CPU cooler: be quiet! first, Noctua for longer coverage
Choose the Pure Rock 3 Black when the exact CPU and mounting kit fit. Its 154 mm height is the first case-clearance check. Then verify the exact CPU, motherboard layout, mounting kit and intended sustained workload. Socket support alone does not establish adequate cooling for every CPU that uses that socket.
Check BK039, not a Slim, Pro or LX model. The complete cooler measures 71 × 124 × 154 mm; a bare-heatsink dimension is not the full installed depth. Include the fan, clips, nearby memory and panel clearance when checking the assembly.
The Noctua NH-U12S redux offers six-year rather than three-year warranty coverage. Choose it when that coverage matters and its 158 mm height, socket support and mounting requirements fit. The be quiet! remains the starting tower pick when its shorter 154 mm assembly fits the build.
The redux includes an NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM fan. Its 25.1 dB(A) figure describes that fan; it does not establish that the assembled cooler beats the Pure Rock’s 31.2 dB(A) complete-cooler rating. Choose the CPU cooler through compatibility and relevant application evidence, not that subtraction.
Plan the configuration that fits
Choose fans for the case mounts and airflow path, then check header load and CPU-cooler clearance. There is no required fan count here. Keep serviceable existing fans when they already do the job. Choosing where the boxes sit? Our small rack and shelf comparison includes the space and clearance checks.
If the case cannot accept either tower’s height, neither is the right purchase. Check a cooler designed for the actual enclosure and socket instead of trying to make a tall tower fit. Raising a fan to clear memory can also change installed height, so check the final arrangement rather than only the heatsink drawing.
Noctua’s airflow guidance starts with case ventilation, supported fan positions and component fit. Clear accumulated dust and avoid obstructing the intended path. Counting intake and exhaust fans alone does not measure pressure balance or prove that every component receives enough cooling.
Match the controller, then set the curve
Check the fan’s connector and the board’s control mode before blaming the hardware. Noctua’s control guide distinguishes PWM duty control from voltage-based regulation and explains that default curves may be too aggressive. Use the board’s documented tuning procedure where required.
Choose a sensor that represents the work being cooled. An idle CPU reading cannot validate airflow during simultaneous CPU, GPU and storage work. A less abrupt response may reduce distracting surges, but it still needs a thermal check through load changes.
Verify starting, continued running and restarting at the chosen minimum separately. Do not assume that a commanded percentage equals measured RPM or that every PWM fan stops the same way. Preserve thermal protections and a working fallback rather than copying an arbitrary temperature curve.
Verify the purchase in the assembled box
Keep panels, filters, workload and observation position consistent. Record ambient conditions, background sound, actual RPM, relevant component temperatures and completed work. Change one factor at a time, then repeat the comparison against the starting configuration.
Include cold start, steady light load, sustained representative combined load and transitions. If reporting numerical acoustics, record the instrument, position and settings; a phone reading or listening impression should keep its own label. Check whether the outcome meets both the thermal requirement and the sound goal before keeping the change.
Buy the Noctua G2 for the 120 mm job, ARCTIC for a compatible 140 mm position, and a tower only when CPU cooling is the problem. Fit and supported control decide whether the purchase belongs in the box.
