Ethernet termination kit for a homelab: crimp plugs or punch down keystones?
Choose a matched Klein crimper and Cat6 plugs or a TRENDnet punch-down tool with Cable Matters keystones. Count parts, finish one end and test the link.

OUR PICKS / YOUR SETUP
Find your fit.
Choose Klein VDV226-110 with VDV826-703 for matching plug ends, or TRENDnet TC-PDT with compatible Cable Matters Cat6 jacks for fixed runs. Match the cable to the connector and test one completed link before repeating.

Terminate compatible solid UTP cable in standard keystone openings.
The last metre of cable shouldn’t turn into a drawer full of almost-right plugs. Choose a matched crimper and plug system for male cable ends; choose a punch-down tool and compatible keystone jacks for a fixed run you can patch at either end. You need one route, not every tool in the box.
Specs and termination guidance from the makers, checked November 1, 2026; this is a research-based guide.
Choose the ends before the tool
For a cable that plugs directly into two devices, use RJ45 plugs with cable and a crimper that fit that connector system. For a fixed run ending in a patch panel, wall plate or surface box, keystone jacks give you sockets for ready-made patch leads.
That second route makes changing a rack connection straightforward: move the patch lead rather than remaking the fixed cable end. If you only need a couple of ordinary patch leads, ready-made ones may be all the project needs. Buy termination tools when you actually want to make or finish cable.
| Part | Job | Documented fit | Choose with |

Our small-lab switch and NIC guide covers the equipment at the ends of the cable. This is the kit for finishing the copper between them.
Plug route: buy the crimper and plugs as a system
Klein VDV226-110 plus VDV826-703 is the matched plug route here. The crimper cuts and strips cable, then crimps and trims the protruding wires flush. Its ratchet completes the crimping cycle, and the tool carries a wiring guide.
Klein specifically pairs the VDV826-703 Cat6 plugs with this crimper. The plugs accept solid or stranded cable and come in a 50-pack. Choose cable that fits the connector; “Cat6” names the category, while conductor construction and physical fit still matter.
The VDV226-110 tool page lists a 28–22 AWG tool range and says to use Klein Pass-Thru connectors. Standard closed-end RJ45 plugs belong with a different compatible tool. That one model check saves a surprisingly dull afternoon.
Keystone route: a punch-down tool and solid UTP
Choose TC-PDT with the Cable Matters jacks for a compatible solid-cable run. TRENDnet’s TC-PDT seats and cuts wire terminations, with interchangeable, reversible 110/Krone blades, adjustable actuation and spare-blade storage.
The Cable Matters 180005x10 family fits standard keystone openings in panels, wall plates and surface boxes. The white 10-pack is the pick here. Maker guidance supports 23/24 AWG UTP, and its wiring guide identifies solid cable for this jack route.
Use the blade that matches the IDC termination and follow the jack’s printed T568A or T568B colour map. The slot positions on a jack are not a plug pin-order diagram. Keep the same chosen scheme at both ends of a straight-through link and preserve the pair twists close to the terminations; Leviton’s termination guidance illustrates those practices.
Support the jack on a proper termination base while working. The 10-pack doesn’t include the punch-down stand; plan that support separately. Fit the jack’s covers once the terminations are seated and trimmed.
Count the ends, not just the runs
For the example below, each made patch cord has two plug ends. Each fixed run has a keystone at both ends and uses two existing ready-made patch cords to reach the equipment.
| Four of this job | Ends to buy | Patch leads for the equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Four patch cords you make | 8 plugs | Those four finished cords |
| Four fixed runs between keystones | 8 jacks | 8 ready-made patch cords |
A 10-pack covers those eight jack positions with two jacks left. Count your own panel and outlet positions before choosing pack quantities; you don’t need both termination systems just because they’re in this guide.
Make one test piece first
Disconnect both cable ends, including PoE power, before cutting or terminating.
For the Klein plug route, the maker’s crimping instructions give you a sensible first-piece routine:
- Prepare the jacket carefully. Score it, remove the scrap by hand and inspect the conductor insulation. Cut off a damaged section and restart if the stripper nicked it.
- Arrange the wires using the tool or connector’s wiring guide. Inspect the order through the clear plug before committing the crimp.
- Seat the cable jacket beyond the strain latch. The latch needs to grip the jacket, not just the loose conductors.
- Complete the ratchet cycle. Let the matching tool crimp and flush-trim the wires, then remove loose cuttings and inspect the end.
- Test before reconnecting equipment. Check the completed cable’s wire map, then connect it for a link-speed check.
For a keystone run, use the jack’s colour map and compatible punch-down blade instead of the crimper. Seat and trim every conductor, inspect the result, fit the covers and test the completed run with patch leads at both ends.
Test the wiring, then the working link
A wire-map pass checks continuity and connections; it does not certify 10GbE performance. Fluke explains verification, qualification and certification. Our Ethernet cable tester guide helps you choose the appropriate troubleshooting tool.
Once the wiring passes, reconnect the equipment, inspect the negotiated link speed and follow the two-host iperf3 test. If a fresh termination behaves badly, swap in a known-good patch lead to narrow down the cable, port or adapter before making more ends.
Finish one link, check it for the job, then repeat. A tidy rack is nicer when every cable in it has earned its place.
